Words for the Weary

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9

All who are involved in the work of the Lord know the feeling of being weary in the work. Isaiah tells us that “Even the youths shall faint and be weary” (Isaiah 40:30). Weariness is a common experience for us all. Yet, Paul instructed the church in Galatia “not to be weary in well doing”. How then can we follow such an admonition when weariness is common among all men? I think there are several things that the Scripture gives us to aid us in fighting the weariness of life and service.

First, in Isaiah 40:31 we are instructed to “Wait upon the LORD”. In the days of our weariness, we are to look unto the Lord and wait upon Him. He is able to renew our strength. Psalm 42:5 tells us in the days of our weariness to “hope thou in God”. Our hope is in the Lord and should be in nothing else. Christian, in the days of weariness, let us follow David’s advice: “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” (Ps. 27:14)

Second, we should take our weariness to the Lord and tell Him about it. The Lord Jesus in Matthew 11:28 told us to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Jesus has bid us to come to Him when we are weary. The song writer J. E. Rankin asked “Are you weary, are you heavy-hearted?” The response to the question then follows, “Tell it to Jesus”. Why should we go through this life weary? Why should we be overcome with care? Peter tells us that we are to cast all of our cares upon him; for he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).

The Lord knows us well and He knows that we are prone to become weary in the way that He has called us to. Yet, He does not want us to live in weariness. He has provided a way of escape for He is faithful unto His own. Dear Christian, allow His Word to aid you in the days of your weariness.
