Getting Away

This weekend marks the beginning of summer for those who like to get away from it all and head out into the great outdoors and relax. It is enjoyable to take a break and relax from time to time, and the May 24 weekend provides that opportunity. I personally have no desire to leave the comfort of my house and bed and trade it for a “waterproof” tent and sleep on the ground in a sleeping bag. I don’t want to “get away” that much. This is especially true considering the weather we often experience at this time of year in Newfoundland. If I owned a travel trailer or had a “get away” like a country house or cabin, it may be quite a different story.

There is another type of “getting away” that I would like to consider. If we choose not to follow God in our daily walk, we are “getting away” from Him. We certainly cannot make this erroneous decision in our personal lives without tragic consequences. We cannot “take a break” from God and continue to expect His blessings. Paul’s example to us in II Timothy 4:7 is to continue in the faith, “...I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” We have so little time here on earth to do Christ’s bidding. There should be no “break” from serving the Lord. “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering...” Hebrews 10:23. We need to continue steadfastly in walking with our Lord every day.

Finally, there is no “getting away” with sin. You can’t get away with sin in your life. For the one who has not accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour, the Bible states “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23. The Christian cannot prosper if he has unconfessed sin in his life. There is punishment for the believer who continues in sin. “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth...” Hebrews 12:6

Enjoy your “get away” and vacation this summer. But stay close to God, don’t get away from the Saviour.
