Enduring for the Prize
“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 3:14
We have come to end of our study on spiritual maturity. We understand that it is our responsibility to “go on unto perfection” (Hebrews 6:1). Our final challenge is now before us as we come to Philippians 3:14. Paul here reminds us that in the Christian life as we seek to draw closer to the Lord Jesus and grow in our spiritual maturity, that there is a need for us to endure. The road to spiritual maturity is a long road and at times it is difficult to travel. The difficulties that we face cause us to become “weary in well doing” (Galations 6:9), and that can lead to discouragement and despair. We must however endure that we might gain the prize, that we might obtain unto that next level of maturity.
Paul in the verses preceding this final challenge gives to us three thoughts that will help us be successful as we seek to endure for the prize. First, we must maintain a clear understanding of where we are on the road to spiritual maturity. In verses 12 and 13, Paul said that he had not attained. We are on a journey and we have not yet arrived. There is still much road to travel. If we are going to reach our destination, we must stay the course. Second, keep a clear view of the road ahead. In verse 13, Paul tells us to look forward and not to get bogged down by looking back. All success and all failures are in the past. Look forward and “go on unto perfection”. Third, we must be determined to finish the course. Beloved press on, endure so that you might gain the prize.
