What Is Truth?

All four gospels record the murder of Jesus - Truth Incarnate. As He stood on trial before Pilate, and official of the Roman Government, Jesus made it clear that He came into the world to be a witness of the truth. Frustrated, Pilate flippantly asked the Son of God, "What is truth?" (John 18:37-38)

“…God our Savior; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:3b, 4), is “…not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:9)

Concerning repentance, while Jesus was teaching the multitudes during his public ministry, He gave a solemn warning to repent in Luke 13:1-5. He taught that calamity can happen to anyone because all are human. Concerning eternal life, "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

The truth about the truth is people need it. The Word of God says that “Mercy and truth are met together;…” (Psalm 85:10). That means that until one faces the truth there will be no mercy from God. Only turning to God will he show mercy and grant salvation. "Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes [scripture]." (Psalm 119:155). Jesus, in rebuking the Jewish religious leaders who would not believe that He was the promised Son of God, instructed them to "Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. Any ye will not come to me, that ye might have life." (John 5:39-40)

What the Apostle Paul taught of the Holy Scriptures is that they are they "…which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." (2 Timothy 3:15) As a humble man of God, Paul testified, "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief." (2 Timothy 1:15).

The answer to Pilate's question, "What is truth?" is found in Jesus. He said, "I am….the Truth…." (John 14:6).
