The Wind and the Waves

“And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he (Jesus) was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish. And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!”
Matthew 8: 24-27

As native Newfoundlanders, we can understand the emotions aroused in the disciples’ hearts and minds. We have experienced firsthand the devastation that the power of nature can wreak on man. We are all too familiar with the grief and pain that the wind and waves have caused to countless lives. The disciples, no doubt, were also aware of the sunken fishing boats and lives lost to the sea. After all, the majority of them were fishermen. When the disciples woke Christ, they were looking for help, but they didn’t expect such a quick response time. Christ simply got up, spoke, and there was dead calm. Impossible to comprehend, some would say, but “God specializes in things thought impossible”. What kind of man is this? Look at what He has done for you, the same God that created the world and calmed the sea is the Saviour of all who will come to Him and believe. You can call on the Saviour in stormy weather as well as the calm. He always hears your prayer, and His response time is out of this world.

“The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and even for evermore.” Psalm 121:8
