What Shall Be Required of You?
“For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.” Luke 12:48
Our text this week, reminds us all of an important truth: there is a day of reckoning coming for all mankind. Paul stated in II Corinthians 5:10 that “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.” All of us will one day stand before our Savior and give an account for our lives. We will all be judged according to how we have lived in light of what has been entrusted to us. We know that it is our duty as a Christian to be a good steward of that which God gives to us (I Corinthians 4:2). Our text today reminds us that to those who have been entrusted with much, more will be required of them.
Often we feel that this principle applies to others for certainly in our minds we have not been given much. Yet, I have been reminded of just how much we have been given in our generation. We have been given the freedom to worship God without the interference of government or the fear of persecution; yet many Christians who have been given this freedom have chosen to ignore it and become indifferent to the blessing of worship. We have been given the blessing of the completed Scriptures in our own language that we might read and study the precious truths of God’s Word. However, this blessing has been taken for granted as we allow the opportunities to read and study our Bibles to be replaced with worldly pleasures. The blessing of the Scriptures has been made into a point of contention as men exalt their opinions about the Bible instead of loving the Word itself. We have been given the privilege of partnering together with God in the proclaiming of His Gospel, and yet we often are too ashamed to speak His name.
Let me ask you today as I must ask myself: if the Lord Jesus would come for us today, how would He find us and what would He require of us? To us much has been given and to us much will be required, I believe.
